Speed up the Start Menu

You can use this tip to speed up the Start Menu in Windows XP release candidate 1. You can customize the speed of the Start Menu by editing a Registry Key.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type Regedit in the box, and then click OK.
  3. Expand the menu in the left panel and select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop folder.
  4. Scroll down in the right panel and double click on the MenuShowDelay file.
  5. In the Value Data box, change to default value for the menu speed from 400 to a lesser number, such as 1.
  6. Click OK.
Caution: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on your computer.

A Windows XP shutdown icon on your desktop

  • Right-click an empty space on your desktop
  • Select the option "new shortcut"
  • Type "shutdown -s -t 0" (Exactly as shown here, but without the quotes. The last character in the command is a zero.)
  • Click next
  • Type a name for the shortcut (e.g. Fast shutdown) and click finish
Now you have a new icon on your desktop. Let's customize it some more.
  • Right-click the new icon and select properties.
  • In the dialog box that opens up, click change icon.
  • You may see a warning message that shutdown.exe contains no icons, just click ok if you see this
  • Choose a new icon
You are now ready to test your new Windows XP shutdown button. Make sure to close all applications and double-click your new icon to shutdown your computer.
Once the shutdown mechanism is started, there is only one way to stop your machine from going down. That's what the next part is all about.

Disabling Recent Documents History

The bad thing about Recent Documents History is that Windows XP has to calculate
what should be put there each time you boot Windows, which can slow things down.
1. Open the Registry Editor (select Start/Run, type regedit, and click OK).
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mcft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
3. Create a NoRecentDocsHistory D_WORD key. Double-click the value to open it
once it is created.
4. Set the Data Value to 1 to enable the restriction.
5. Click OK and close the Registry Editor. You'll need to restart the computer for the
change to take effect.
5.

Customize Internet Explorer's Title Bar

Open Registry by going to Start then Run and Enter regedit. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\Software\ Microsoft\ Internet. Explorer\Main. In right hand
panel look for string "Window Title" and change its value to whatever custom text
you want to see.

Removing the Shortcut arrow from Desktop Icons

Goto Start
then Run and Enter regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ ROOTlnkfile.
Delete the IsShortcut registry value. You may need to restart Windows XP.

Change Drive Letters In Xp

Go to Start >
Control Panel >
Administrative Tools >
Computer Management,
Disk Management,
then right-cl!ck the partition whose name you want to change (cl!ck in
the white area just below the word "Volume") and select "change drive letter and
paths."
From here you can add, remove or change drive letters and paths to the partition.

Renaming The Recycle Bin icon

To change the name of the Recycle Bin desktop icon, cl!ck Start then goto Run,
write Regedit and press Enter. It opens Registry Editor.

Now in Registry Editor go nto:
HKEY_CLASSES_ ROOT/CLSID/ {645FF040- 5081-101B- 9F08-00AA002F954 E}
and change the name "Recycle Bin" to whatever you want (don't type any quotes).
Managing Tasks:
You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using
'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find
that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going
on in your system.

Increasing Band-Width By 20% for batter Net Speed

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

To get it back:
cl!ck Start then Run and type " gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor.
Then go to:
Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates
then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.
Double cl!ck on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but
the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits
the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this
setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will
allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win
2000 as well.
